Production diary

During my production time(pre and post) i had to change certain things about my idea, editing and so forth, but the most drastic change i had to make was changing my idea completely, i had to do this because the person that i had chosen to do the acting could not make it. I then deemed it necessary to change my idea completely.
Quite a few things went wrong when i did the filming for my video, but in the end everything worked out eventually.
All of the editing went well.

Video evaluation.

Once i had shown my video and collected the questionnaires it was time to find out what people thought. From the results that i gathered, i found that 90% of viewers had a possitive reaction to the video.
Many of the people that viewed the video liked the fact that it was to the point.
During my look through the questionnaires, i found that there were many different meanings that people had thought up, that the video was possibly about, for example one viewer stated that they thought the video was about short attention spans.
The one improvement that people consistently said could be made was to make the video longer. Another improvement that came up quite a few times was to add more characters to the video.

Exhibition space ideas.

One of my exhibition possibilities is to show the video at my old school, this is because there is a large group of people for me to get an idea of how the video is received by others.
Another idea for an exhibition space is T45 this is, to me, relevant to my video because i personally overlook it as i never use it.

Questionnaire

Question ideas.

Did you enjoy the video?

What did you like/dislike about the video?

Explain what you think the video is about?

How could this video be improved?

The use of technology, techniques and styles.

In 'Doll Face' by Andy Huang and 'Muto' the use of animation is very prominent, both of the videos use different types of animation, for example 'Doll Face' uses computer animation, this type of animation is good for creating special effects like the mechanical arm in the video, whereas the animation of 'Muto' is stop frame animation, which is good at showing more 'real life' things. Both of these animation techniques are quite time consuming. Stop frame animation is possibly harder to produce because, in order to create fluid motion an animator would need to spend days or possibly weeks creating the animation. However, computer animation can be equally as hard, due to the various things that could go wrong with a computer.

Narrative and non-narrative structures.

In many pieces of video there is often some sort of narrative contained within, often these narratives are structured in a traditional style, with a beginning, middle and end, however this is not always the case. In some pieces of video there is an invert to the traditional structure, where the end comes first, and the beginning last, whereas in many pieces of artistic video there is no narrative structure at all. This is to allow an audience to get a meaning from the video without waiting for an end. An example of this is 'Chameleon' by Tina Gonsalves.

Audience and audience interpretation of the work.

Alot of the time, when a piece of art is produced and shown, the audience will often have different interpretations of what the artwork is about. It is not especially important that everybody has the same interpretation of art, as it is usually more important to the artist that people have their own interpretation of the artwork, because the artist often create art with multiple meanings for an audience to interpret.

The use of exhibition space to create meaning.

Artists often use exhibition space to create meaning, for example, in Brighton there was an exhibit in a darkened church. I don't know if anyone else feels the way I do about darkened churches, however, the exhibited work was, I thought, quite creepy and the surroundings supported this thought.
The exhibit would have had a completely different feel if it were in, lets say, a brightly lit building. It would likely also have a completely different meaning to the one it had in the church.
It is often not the artwork that creates meaning for a piece, but rather the surroundings it is exhibited in.

My experimental video ideas.

one of my ideas for my experimental video is a person falling down a flight of stairs, repeating the footage, to seem as though they are falling down a really long flight of stairs, before having that person get to the bottom of the stairs, then having them get up, unhurt, then looking around and walking off.
Another one of my ideas is to film someone talking, then having the voice fade out, after that having the person sort of blur. the camera would then zoom in to the background behind the person which has become more focused.

Koyaanisquatsi

VISUAL OBSERVATIONS
In the film Koyaanisquatsi (meaning "life out of balance") there are alot of varied and seemingly random visual images, from cave paintings at the beginning to exploding rockets at the end. As far as i know all of the images are in colour.

AUDIO OBSERVATIONS
The audio used in Koyaanisquatsi is, like the images, varied but not as random, as the audio seems to go with the images. The audio is non-diagetic, as it is not a part of what is happening in the scene.

CONCEPTUAL NOTES
Koyaanisquatsi has alot of concepts i think, concepts such as life not being in balance with nature. Another concept that i can think of, is how human nature is not like the rest of life on Earth, its essentially out of balance with the world.

Doll Face by Andy Huang

Concept.
Doll Face by Andy Huang is a video that really makes a viewer think. For me the end of the video was really striking because the face lying broken on the floor as it made me think that in some peoples endless pursuit of perfection there will come a time when they can go no further and they've essentially destroyed who they are.
Craft.
This video was crafted using computer animation to create its desired effect.
